How this all started.

My name is Brittany and I have a bit of a zoo going on in my house. I live in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia and I have three Silverlaced Wyandotte hens, two Rhode Island Red hens, one Rhode Island Red rooster, a tuxedo cat name Fawkes, a ginger kitten named Giacomo and a Golden Retriever named Belle. All of my hens have Quentin Tarantino themed names: I have Go-Go, Arlene, Zoe, B.B., Alabama and the rooster is named Bill. I live here in this zoo with my wonderful husband. I'm a professional photographer and a heritage interpreter.

A lot of people are curious about my chickens, they're not too common around here anymore it seems. Thus the blog. I got my chickens in early May as chicks. I had 6 RIRs and 6 SLWs. I had 5 roosters and 7 hens. One was killed at the beginning of the summer. She was too friendly... she probably didn't realize when the others ran and hid from a larger bird, that she should too. She used to follow me around peeping the whole time. She was a sweetheart RIR named Beatrix. Two of the RIR roosters were given away and two were made supper. Though one was certainly not what we expected! We thought that he was a she, named Mia, turned out she was Marcellus. My Rhode Island Red hen B.B. is a little different as well. She has not laid an egg yet and her wattles are smaller than everyone's. I had to bring her in and strengthen her up. She was at the bottom of the pecking order and seems to have a respiratory issues to top it off. But she's special!

So now we've got some eggs that we're going to incubate! So I want to keep track of everything with the blog! :)
